Glorious weather greeted competitors at the recent Midlands Carriagedriving’s two-day event at Thoresby Park in Nottinghamshire (14 & 15 May).

Thoresby is a beautiful private estate open to members of the public, many of whom sat and watched the competition in progress over both days.

The dressage and cones arenas were laid out in front of the magnificent Thoresby Hall, adding to the atmosphere.

Sue Mart and Fudge (Open Single Pony) performed the best dressage score of the competition (31.70) with Paul Hart and Rio in the Open Single Horse also producing a sub-40 score.

Other first phase scores of note were Glenys Ellis (Open Single Pony), Lyn Chorlton (Novice Single Pony) and Helen Cruikshank (Pony Tandem) who all scored less than 50 penalties.

However, of these, it was only Lyn who retained her early score following a demanding cones course that saw several balls fall and time penalties incurred.

To prove Lyn’s double clear was no fluke, Megan Wheeldon (Open Pony Single) also drove the course without penalty and Joanne Gadsby had just one ball down in the Short Format Horse class – so it could be done.

The first three obstacles were in the field next to the lorry park, providing spectators with plenty of action in one place while the remaining obstacles were laid out round the park.

Megan drove quickest through the obstacles, promoting herself and Red to top of the leader board in her class followed by Glenys and Sue. Lyn led her class throughout with first-timer Adele Farrell completing in second place.

Despite a disappointing cones score, Paul held on to his lead with Graham Clements as runner-up.

Another to hold their lead throughout was Mary Fuller in the Novice Single Horse class. Driving her part-Percheron horse that she also competes in ridden eventing, she kept Miriam Parker back in second place.

All the other classes sadly only had single entries but all completed; Chris Patrick (Intermediate Horse), Angela Flanagan (Open Horse Pair), Pat Cooper (Horse Tandem), Angela Smith (Pony Team), the afore-mentioned Joanne Gadsby and Helen Cruikshank plus Short Format Pony competitor Amanda Axe.
