17 October 2009
It was with great sadness on Saturday morning, the 17th October 2009, that we were told Joe Pullen had passed away peacefully.
Joe?s life with horses started in the show-jumping world. He was on the BHS BSJA Committee and helped to start the careers of Graham Fletcher, David Bowen and Geoff Billington by providing them with good jumpers. Then, in 1974, he discovered the joys and excitement of horse driving. He will be well remembered driving his grey pair Steptoe and Tiptoe for the first time at Beamish in 1975.
He continued competing in Horse Pairs with his wife Doreen driving in Pony Pairs for almost 30 years. He was elected onto the BHS HDT Committee and during his time was a wonderful fund raiser by organising Gala Nights at his club ?The Talk of the North? and latterly at the Wendover Hotel.
The most successful Gala Night was held at a club in South Wales where ?20,000 was raised for the Special Development Fund. He was Asistant Chef d?Equipe to Tommy Fawcett in the 90s and recently organised memorable trips to Hungary.
Most of all he will be remembered for the wonderful and successful events he and Doreen organised at Tatton Park.
Our deepest sympathies go to his wife Doreen and daughter Stephanie. Joe will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
