2006 Kuster BEF Groom Award Final
3 January 2007

The final of the prestigious Kuster BEF Groom Award was held on the 20th December at Warwick racecourse. The thick fog that prevailed throughout the day did nothing to dampen the spirits of the grooms and their guests.

Judges Mike Tucker and Sarah Pidgley interviewed the finalists to find out more about each groom and to hear why they felt they should win the award. They were searching for the groom that displayed the most commitment, dedication and could demonstrate that they had a made a difference in a special way.

The finalists were able to relax after the interviews were over and along with their guests and the judges enjoyed a champagne lunch. This was a great opportunity for them all to swap stories and experiences from their different spheres of the equestrian industry.

The judges were very complimentary about all the finalists and commented on how hard it was to pick a winner. They have, however, chosen a winner and 2 runners up who have all been invited to the British Breeders dinner in January where the winner will be announced.

The top three placed grooms (in alphabetical order) are:

  • Catherine Owen ? groom for World Champion partnership Zara Phillips and Toytown.
  • Jackie Potts ? groom for World Equestrian Games team medallist, William Fox-Pitt.
  • Lynne Parkinson ? Yard supervisor at the ILPH yard in Norfolk.

The judges also wanted to make a special mention of a further finalist, Melanie Foley ? a groom from Susan Gamble Riding School in Scotland. They felt she showed great commitment and dedication, especially at such an early stage in her career.

The standard of all the finalists was remarkably high and both judges were extremely impressed by all the grooms who attended. Congratulations to all 9 finalists and we wish the final three good luck at the Awards Dinner in January.
