The first ever combined World Pony Driving Championships were held at Karlstetten, Austria on 14th ? 17th August. The British team comprised six drivers - Julie Camm and Sara Howe in the single pony class, Jo Rennison and Ursula Hirschberg driving pairs and Emily Bennett and John Pickford with their pony teams. Philippa Gammell and Elizabeth Rowe also competed as individual drivers. Georgina Frith, who was also selected, could not compete because of a training injury she suffered a week before the competition.

From the start, the event was dominated by German drivers, who scored wins in the dressage phase in all three classes - singles, pairs and four-in-hand teams. The British team were not far behind, lying in second place after the dressage with excellent tests performed by Julie Camm (2nd palce) and Emily Bennett (8th).
The German drivers started to show their dominance in the marathon, with a 1st and two 3rd placings. The Dutch drivers came up from behind into second place and after the cones, the Austrian team finished in third place. The British team finished fourth, only narrowly missing out on a Bronze medal.
Liz Rowe had an unfortunate tip-up in obstacle 2 but managed to complete the marathon. Sadly, one of Ursula Hirschberg's ponies suffered a shoulder injury in the water obstacle and, despite the best attentions of the veterinary team, had to be put down. Although devastated by the accident, Ursula drove her spare pony in the cones phase on the final day.
