2002 National Champions

The 2002 National Carriage Driving Championships took place in the splendid setting of Windsor Great Park on 13th - 15th September. 123 Drivers who qualified for the Championships competed in the BHDTA-organised event.

In the Open Pony class, Amanda Saville from Lockerbie in Dumfries stormed into the lead with a brilliant marathon and retained her first place by over 13 penalties after the cones round. In the open Horse, David Matthews Jr. from High Wycombe in Bucks (pictured right) took the lead in the Dressage and Marathon to finish 15 penalties ahead of the rest of the class.

The Pony Pairs class was won by Jo Renison from Guildford in Surrey and the Horse Pairs Champion was Terry Selway from Little Baddow in Essex.

Liz Rowe from Hassocks, West Sussex took the lead in the Pony Tandems and Pat Cooper from Bardsey, Nr. Leeds won the Horse Tandems.

In the Pony Teams class, Emily Bennett from Helsby in Cheshire  won the Championship after an excellent Marathon and Cones rounds. The Horse Teams Championship took place at Lowther Driving Trials on 9-11 August because at the time of the Windsor Championships any of the team drivers were in Jerez in Spain, representing Britain in the World Equestrian Games. The Horse Teams Champion at Lowther was Boyd Exell.

In the Novice Championships, Kerry Copas from Buckingham took first in the Novice Pony class and Joanna Sugden from Tiverton in Devon won the Novice Horse class.
